Chapter 10: Nobody Drives the Guests

Deirdre drove with one hand on the wheel and the other pressing a towel to my side.

The county hospital was forty minutes down a two-lane road.

She did not speak for the first twenty.

"You don't have to do this," I said.

"I know."

"You said nobody drives the guests."

"My father made that rule after a guest drove him into a ditch." She kept her eyes on the road. "I never needed it until today."

The emergency room had six beds and one doctor.

He was gray at the temples and tired in the eyes.

He peeled the dressing back and whistled low.

"Who closed this?"

"A hospital in Chicago. A week ago."

"And they sent you home?"

"Three days after surgery."

"Did you bleed?"

"I hemorrhaged. They gave me blood."

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he looked at the paper I had folded in my wallet, the discharge summary they had handed me at the door.

He read it twice.

"This says no postoperative complications."

"There were."

"This says routine recovery. Vitals stable. Signed by the charge nurse."

He turned the page toward me.

At the bottom, in a neat hand, was Tobin's name.

"A transfusion is a complication, son," the doctor said. "A hemorrhage is a complication. Whoever signed this either was not in the room, or wanted it left out."

My throat closed.

I had walked out of that hospital with a paper that said I had never nearly died.
