Chapter 4: Reversal

I gripped the printout until my knuckles went white.

Why would I have a vasectomy?

For Sabine.

She told me over and over that she was a career woman, that she was scared of the pain, and that a baby would swallow her whole life.

She wanted us childfree for good.

I love children.

I said yes anyway, because I loved her.

We used protection for five years.

Then a few weeks ago she read a story online.

A childfree couple. The husband hit forty and changed his mind. The wife could no longer have children, so he found a mistress and had a baby with her.

Sabine put her phone down on the bed and told me she was afraid I would become that man.

I did not argue.

The next morning I walked into a clinic.

I ignored every friend and relative who begged me not to.

I meant to tell her on our fifth anniversary and hand it over like a gift.

Now there would be no worrying, ever.

She never gave me the chance.

"You caught it early," the nurse said. "The tubes are still healthy. A reversal can restore everything."

I texted Heath: "In a hospital bed. Infection. I'm fine. Sabine doesn't know."

He answered before I put the phone down.

"I'm coming. Don't move. Don't sign anything."
