Chapter 13: The Lake House
The lake house stood gray and shuttered at the end of a gravel road.
My father braked so hard the car slid.
He was out before the engine died, and Felix and I ran after him.
I wore Felix's coat over my nightgown, with my boots unlaced.
The nurse opened the door with a coffee mug in her hand.
She was a thin woman in pink scrubs, and she did not look surprised.
"Mrs. Penhallow said no visitors until Monday," she said.
"I am his son," said my father.
"The proxy holder decides."
She pressed one arm across the doorframe.
I ducked under it.
The back bedroom smelled of antiseptic and shut windows.
My grandfather lay on a narrow bed with his mouth open.
His skin was the color of candle wax.
A tube ran from his arm to a bag on a pole, and a small pump clicked beside it.
I counted his breaths against my own pulse.
Six in a minute.
On the table lay a sheet of cream paper covered in square, upright handwriting.
