Chapter 23: Princess
They buried my father under a gray sky, in a cathedral so cold that our breath hung in the air.
The whole country came.
Farmers from the high valleys stood shoulder to shoulder with ministers and old soldiers, and the line of mourners ran down the steps and across the square.
I walked behind the coffin in a black coat the palace tailor had made overnight, with Eli's hand in mine.
He did not fidget once.
He had dressed himself in a small black suit and his dinosaur backpack, because he said the king would want him to bring his soldier.
At the end of the service the old councillor climbed the steps of the altar.
He unrolled a scroll and read it in a voice that carried to the doors.
"By the word of the late king, and by the vote of the council, Princess Adelaide of Halvern is the sole heir to the crown."
The crowd said nothing at all.
Then a woman near the back began to clap.
Slowly at first, then a hundred, then every hand in the cathedral.
