Chapter 6: The Silver Wolf

The healer stitched Garrick's scalp at the long table in the great hall while the fire popped behind him.

He did not make a sound through any of it.

When the healer finished, the housekeeper put a cup of tea in his hands, and he held it without drinking.

"Theron found out I called the clinic," he said. "He found out I called the gate."

"Who hit you?" I asked.

"Two of his enforcers, in the pack house garage, with his daughter's car running outside." He turned the cup in his hands. "He didn't do it himself. He doesn't have to."

I sat on the bench across from him.

Torin stood at the end of the table, as far from the fire as he could get and still be in the room.

"Tell it from the start," Torin said.

Garrick looked at him, and then at me.

"I've been Beta in Pinebrook for twenty years," he said. "Eleven of them, I've driven a woman to your gate every time the call came."

"Eleven," I said.

"Not all of them were chosen at a Tribute Moon. Theron picked most of them in private. A widow whose husband owed the pack. A girl with no family. Women he wanted gone, with a story to cover it."

"My mother," I said.

"Your mother was the first." His voice cracked. "He needed a name. Your father had died the winter before, and she had two kids and no pack standing. She asked me if it would hurt."

I did not move.

"What did you tell her?"

"That I didn't know."

The fire cracked, and nobody spoke.

"I should have driven her somewhere else," Garrick said. "I should have driven all of them somewhere else. I told myself the King was a worse thing than Theron, and I was only the driver."
