Chapter 12: The Kitchen

"I was in that kitchen," Lorenzo said.

My mother's hand flew to her pearls.

"You see?" she cried. "He admits it!"

"I was in that kitchen two years ago in November, a little after midnight," he said. "My father sent me to speak to your husband about the skimming."

Nobody in the room breathed.

"I carried a bottle of wine and no gun. I found the back door open and your husband on the floor."

"Liar," my mother whispered.

"He was already dead, Donata. Shot twice in the chest, and the blood still warm."

I could not move.

I had known my father's death was a heart attack because my mother had told me so, standing in the funeral parlor with a handkerchief in her hand.

I had believed her.

I had picked out the casket.

"And there was a boy beside him," Lorenzo said, "holding the gun."

He turned his head slowly.

He looked at Paolo.

My brother made a sound I had never heard from him.

"He's lying," my mother said, too loud. "Paolo, tell him he's lying."

Paolo's mouth moved, but nothing came out.

"I didn't see his face when I walked in," Lorenzo said. "I saw it when I looked at the piano afterward, in the photograph of the family. I knew it by the chin."

My head turned, as if somebody else were turning it.

I looked at my twin.

Paolo had the same chin I did.

"Pao," I said.

"Liv."

"Pao, say something."

"I can't," he whispered. "I can't, Liv, I can't."

The sound in my ears had become a roar.

My brother was twenty-five years old.

He cried when we put the dog down, and he had given his gun up at the gate rather than fire it.
