Chapter 17: The Seat

Lorenzo's POV

The commission sat in the back room of a shipping office on the east pier.

It had met there since before my grandfather.

Seven chairs stood around a long table, and my godfather sat at the head of it, in the chair that had been my father's.

I had not noticed until that morning that he sat there easily.

"Lorenzo," he said warmly. "Sit. You look tired."

"I am tired."

"Love is tiring." He smiled around the table. "We have all heard."

A few of them smiled back.

I did not sit.

I put the small recorder on the polished wood and pressed the button.

Fiorella's voice filled the room.

It was thin and bitter, and it went on and on.

A week in the kitchen with a paper cup of ice water.

The house, with the deed changed.

A mother who stood where the Don's sister would stand and told her when to stumble.

I watched the faces.

The old man from the north side stopped stirring his coffee.

The two brothers from the airport side looked at each other.

My godfather did not move at all, and that told me more than the rest of them put together.

The recording ended.

"That is a Santoro daughter," I said, "confessing that her mother ordered my sister blinded, and the poison put into the hostage's luggage so the hostage would be blamed for killing me."

"A terrible thing," my godfather said gravely.

"The mother has been charged by the police, and she is out on bail paid by a man she will not name."

"A terrible thing," he said again.

"The girl you voted to kill last night is the one who was meant to die for it."

"The girl kept the Santoro books, Lorenzo."

"She kept them for two years. The skimming ran for ten. Her father found it, and her mother had him shot."
