Chapter 13: The Door
Nolan had one knee on Dutch's back and his eyes on Lorna.
Two of Cliff's men held her by the arms, and a third stood behind with a tire iron hanging from his hand.
Cliff walked toward her.
"Miss Pickett," he said.
"The ledger is on that pallet, and my clock says fifty seconds."
"Lorna is fifty-two years old," Skye said.
"And I may be fifty-two," said Lorna, "but you may all go to hell."
Cliff smiled.
"Fifty seconds, and then we start with a very respectable woman who runs a very disreputable door."
Skye took one step toward the pallet.
Her hands were shaking, and Nolan understood she was letting them see it.
Every man in the circle watched her hands.
Nobody watched Lorna's mouth.
Lorna turned her head, set her teeth in the wrist of the man on her left, and bit down until he screamed.
He let go.
She drove her heel into the other man's shin, and he swore and loosened his grip.
