Chapter 19: Earning It

"Not as your assistant," I said. "Then as what?"

"As the person who tells me when I'm wrong."

"That's a full-time job."

"It's the one I'm offering."

Thirty people were pretending to read their screens.

I took his hand, in front of every one of them, and said, "Ask me again tomorrow."

He took me home instead.

Junie was back from her grandmother's, asleep upstairs with the green backpack on the floor.

The woman who stayed on weekends had gone to bed at nine.

The house was warm, and dark, and smelled like thyme.

In the front hall, Burke shut the door behind us and stood there, not touching me.

"Jillian," he said, and nothing else.

I took off my coat and hung it on the hook by Junie's shoes.

I turned and walked up the stairs ahead of him, slowly, with my hand on the rail.

At the top I stopped outside his bedroom.

"In," I said.

He went in.

He stood in the middle of the room, six foot two, forty-two years old, with his sleeves rolled.

He had a look I had never seen on him.
