In April I came in at twenty to eight, early for me.
The lights on the fourth floor were already on.
The door of the corner office stood open, and a new brass plate was screwed beside it.

I had watched the facilities man put it up in February, and I still stopped to read it every morning.

I did not miss it.

Ines sat at her desk in the gray cardigan she wore on bad days, with a mug of tea steaming beside her keyboard.

On the wall behind her hung the napkin from the diner where we had planned the first company, in a plain black frame.
Under the sketch of a calendar, in her handwriting from the first year: Someday. Pay Ines.
"You're early," she said.
