Chapter 15: What She Saw

Cosima's POV

After my grandfather's call, Perry fell back asleep with one arm across my waist.

I lay awake and watched his face, because for the first time I was allowed to.

He looked younger asleep.

There was a small crease between his brows, and it did not go away even now.

I had not told him all of it.

I had told him about the hospital and the notebook, but not what I saw on Harbor Road.

I had been driving home from my grandfather's birthday dinner with the radio low.

A pair of high headlights had come up behind me on the curve and stayed there.

I slowed to let them pass, and they did not pass.

They hit my rear corner, and the wheel tore out of my hands.

In the mirror, for one second, the dashboard lit the driver's face from below.

He was laughing with his head back, and all I saw was white teeth and a blond head.

Then the car went over the edge, and the glass came in, and I did not see anything for nine days.

That was the real reason I hid my sight.

I had a laugh and a pair of headlights, and no name.

A man who can do that will run the day he thinks anyone has seen him.

So I waited for him to make a mistake, and I let everyone treat me as furniture.

It was the loneliest three weeks of my life.

Then I heard Trent's laugh in a hallway, and his hand closed on my elbow.

I thought, that is the laugh, and he does not know I am listening.

He walked me into a room full of people who laughed when he told them to.
