Chapter 16: Terms

Joelle walked out of the ballroom without another word.

I went after her.

I caught her at the elevators, and she looked at my hand on her sleeve until I took it off.

"Don't," she said.

"Joelle, let me explain."

"Tomorrow. Or never. I haven't decided."

The doors opened and she went in alone.

I watched them close on her red hair.

Heath came up behind me.

He didn't touch me.

"Come with me," I told him. "But stay in the car. I'm going to her place."

"She doesn't want to see you."

"I know."

"Naomi, this is my..."

"It's both of ours. I promised you a week and I kept it. I'd keep it again." I swallowed.

"That doesn't mean it was free."

He nodded.

I took the car keys from his pocket.

It was ten at night when I parked on Elm Street.

The dry cleaner's windows were dark.

A single light burned upstairs.

I climbed the outside stairs and knocked.

"Go away," Joelle said through the door.

"I'm not going anywhere."

"I'll call the police."

"They know me. I'm the librarian."

Silence.

I sat down on the top step with my back against the railing.
