Chapter 19: The Raid on Taylor Street

Eight weeks after Ettore made his call, it turned into eleven black SUVs on Taylor Street at six in the morning.

It was the last Thursday in January, and the street was still blue with the dark.

I was standing in the doorway of Orazio's restaurant with a tray of Gwen's lemon cookies.

Nunzio was back on light duty, and he had asked for something sweet.

The cookies hit the floor when the first agent's boot hit the curb.

"Federal agents," a woman's voice said through a megaphone. "Open the door."

"It's open," Gwen said, behind me, with a soup ladle in her fist.

"Gwen, why do you have a ladle?"

"They took my bat into evidence once already, in my head."

The agents came up the steps in blue vests, a dozen of them, with a warrant folded in a plastic sleeve.

The woman in front was tall and tired and very polite.

"Ma'am, I need you to step aside."

I stayed where I was, with my hand on the frame, and my heart hammering under my coat.

"Read it out loud," I said.

"I beg your pardon?"

"The warrant. I'd like the street to hear what you're about to take from a restaurant."

Behind her, the baker next door had come out in his apron.

Two cooks from the pizzeria followed him, and an old woman with a phone held high.
