Chapter 22: His Son

"Get him in here," I said, between my teeth. "Now. Before the next one."

The doctor didn't ask who.

She opened the yellow door herself.

Orazio stood in the hall with his forehead against the wall and his hands hanging, the way he had stood for an hour.

His face was gray.

"Tabby."

"Come in. I'm asking."

He crossed the threshold of that room for the first time since his wife had painted it.

It did not seem to cost him a step.

He took my hand.

Within a minute I had crushed all the feeling out of his hand.

Fabrizia lay in the narrow bed with her daughter on her chest, and she watched me with her tired, shining eyes.

"Walk," said the doctor. "Lean on him."

We walked the room together, under the felt hummingbirds turning slowly over the crib.

My arm lay over Orazio's shoulders and my forehead rested on his chest.

He was shaking harder than I was.

"You're shaking," I told him.
