Chapter 15: Her Orders

Vicky's POV

I had told him not to follow me, so he stood on the dock.

I walked the length of the planks in yesterday's clothes.

My eyes felt scraped, and I had not cried once.

My father was ten feet behind him with his hands in his pockets.

He gave me a nod and turned and went up to the house, and I loved him for leaving us alone.

"Vic," Gabe said.

"Get your truck keys."

"What?"

"Your keys. Now."

He took them out of his pocket.

"I'm not going to talk," I said. "I did that all night, on a gravel shoulder in the sleet, to nobody. I'm going to tell you what I want and you're going to do it."

"All right."

"All of it. Every word."

"All right, Vicky."

"Don't say my name yet."

He shut his mouth.

I took the keys and walked to the truck, and he followed me.

I drove.

I took the lake road out of the yard with the lake flat and pale on my right and the sun low.

He sat with his hands on his knees and his eyes on them.

I passed the barn and the stop sign.

I stopped a quarter mile short of the rock cut, at the gravel pullout where the old fence ended, and shut the engine off.

Neither of us spoke.

The heater ticked.

"I hate you," I said.

"I know."

"I hate what you did and I hate that you hid it and I hate that I held your hand at that guardrail and you let me think I was helping."

"I know."

"I also hate that I still want you, and I've been sitting in the dark since midnight trying to make it stop."

His breath caught.

"Did it?"

"No."

I turned in the seat to face him.

"Take your jacket off."

He took it off.

"Put your hands on the wheel."

He put them there.
