Chapter 20: The Old Job

Vicky's POV

My phone rang at the charter desk on a Tuesday while Gabe and my father stood eating donuts at the counter.

The screen said COLUMBUS.

"Don't," Gabe said, with his mouth full.

"Why not?"

"You'll answer it and I'll spend the day in a bad mood."

"You're already in a bad mood."

"I'm in a donut mood."

I answered it.

"Vicky Pawlak," my old boss said, warm and quick, the voice I used to hear in my sleep. "I've been trying to reach you for three weeks. I've got a number I'd like to say out loud."

"Go ahead."

He said it.

It was nearly double what I had made.

Gabe stopped chewing.

My father put his donut down on a napkin very slowly.

"It's a director title," my old boss said. "Your own team. Start in January."

"That's generous."

"It's the job you wanted. I know you left on a bad note."

"I left on a good note. I even took my plant."

He laughed.

"So what do you say?"

I looked at the two men.

My father had gone pink under his mustache.

Gabe had gone quiet in the way that meant he was making himself not say anything.

He would have said go, if I had asked.

He would have driven me to Columbus himself and called it a gift.

"Thank you," I said. "No."

"No?"

"I have a job."

"Is this the boat place?"

"It's the boat place," I said. "I took over the charter desk, and I'm good at it, and my father's name is on the sign."

"Vicky, you can't be serious."
