Chapter 10: The Funeral Envoy

The envoy waited at the gate in the first grey of dawn, with a black banner on his horse and mud to his knees.

He was a gaunt man in a Cult officer's coat, and he had ridden four days without sleeping.

Ye-han came down the stairs in his sleeping robe with his hair loose.

Gyeong-wook walked on his left, and Ju-won on Gyeong-wook's other side, holding a lantern.

Ye-han didn't run.

He made himself walk.

"Young Lord," said the envoy, and went down on one knee in the wet.

"The Lord of the Crimson Night passed away at midnight, three days ago.

"The Blood Elder asks that you sit the mourning rite in white, at the Alliance gate.

"All must see that the heir lives and grieves."

Behind Ye-han, Gyeong-wook's hand came to rest at the small of his back.

It was a large warm hand, and it did not move.

"How?" Ye-han said.

His voice sounded very far away.

"His lungs, Young Lord.

"He had been ill all winter."

"I see."

Ye-han looked past the envoy at the road.

A few crows were turning over the lake.

The envoy stood.

He bowed to Gyeong-wook, stiffly, with the formal salute of a man being forced.

Then he turned to bow to the rest of them, and his eyes landed on Ju-won.

Something went through his face.

It was small.

He took half a step back, and his knee bent, and he caught himself with an awkward jerk.
