Chapter 12: The Crescent
Gil Mi-rae cut the arrowhead out of Ju-won's shoulder by lamplight, with her sleeves rolled to the elbow.
She was a short woman with strong forearms and a plain bun, and she hummed a dull tune through the whole thing.
Ye-han stood against the wall of the infirmary with his arms wrapped round himself.
Ju-won lay face-down on the cot, sweating and brave.
"Hold still," Mi-rae said.
"I am holding."
"You are talking. It's the same thing as moving."
She pulled the head free in one clean wrench, and the boy yelped into the pillow.
Blood welled bright in the lamp.
She packed the wound, and bound it, and cleaned her hands on a cloth.
Then she turned back to look at his bare back for a second longer than a physician needs.
The crescent sat on his shoulder blade, pale and small, a quarter-moon.
Her face did not change.
But she reached for the sheet and drew it up over the mark, slowly, and tucked it under his arm.
"Cover that," she said quietly. "Keep it covered.
"Don't take your shirt off in front of anyone you don't know."
"It's only a birthmark," said Ju-won, muffled.
"I know what it is," said Mi-rae. "Sleep."
She said it in a flat, even voice, and she didn't look at Ye-han.
