Chapter 20: The Night Before the Assembly
Nobody moved.
Two hundred men stood in the lanes with their swords half drawn, and not one of them took a step.
The heavy captain with the scar on his cheek had his hand on his hilt.
He looked at the regent in the tent.
He looked at Ye-han in the doorway, with his fan open and his kohl perfect.
"Captain," said Ma softly.
"The Young Lord is ill."
"The Young Lord," said the captain, in a voice that cracked, "walked in on his own feet, Regent.
"He asked for a boy.
"You gave him the boy."
"Do you disobey the Blood Elder?"
"I have served the Cult for twenty years," the captain said.
"The Lord's heir stands there.
"If the heir says kill, I will kill.
"If the heir says nothing, I do not take orders from a man who says the heir is mad."
A ripple went down the lane, and swords went back into scabbards one at a time.
It sounded like rain.
Ma's smile came apart at the corners.
Then came the thunder of feet.
A ragged line of grey robes ran over the meadow from the trees, forty of Gyeong-wook's disciples with drawn swords.
Gyeong-wook ran in front.
He did not stop until he stood beside Ye-han.
He looked at Ma, and at the men, and at the boy at Ye-han's side, and put an arm round Ju-won's shoulders.
"We are leaving," he said.
"No one will stop us.
"The regent knows why."
Ma let out a long, thin breath through his nose.
"The Assembly sits at dawn tomorrow," he said, in his old, mild voice.
"Come and tell the sects what you think you are, Young Lord.
