Chapter 4: The Bathhouse

Ji-hwan woke in the General's bed with his hair spread across the General's chest.

The General was already awake.

He lay on his back, staring at the ceiling beams.

One huge hand rested on Ji-hwan's head.

"You stayed," he said.

"The floor is warm."

"It is a very good floor."

Ji-hwan propped his chin on the General's breastbone and looked at him.

In the gray light, with his hat off, the General looked younger than thirty-three and much more tired.

"Who is Dol-soe?" Ji-hwan asked.

The hand on his head stopped.

It did not go stiff.

It went carefully still.

"A boy I knew," the General said.

"A long time ago."

"You told him to get down off a wall."

"Did I?"

"You cried."

"Soldiers do," the General said, and that was all, and Ji-hwan let it be.

The estate bathhouse stood at the back of the garden.

It was a tiled room with a sunken pool and a stone bench, and steam poured up through the rafters.

Ji-hwan made the General come with him.

"I'm not a man who gets bathed," the General said, standing on the wet tile with his coat in his hands.

"You are today."

Ji-hwan shut the door.

He sat the General on the bench with a bucket and a wooden ladle, and he knelt behind him on the hot stone to wash his back.

It was a good back, a wall of muscle with a long, ugly pink scar from shoulder blade to hip.

Ji-hwan ran his soapy hands over every inch of it.

"This one is a sword," he said.

"Yes."

"And this?"

"A whip."

The General's voice did not change when he said it, and Ji-hwan felt something go cold in his stomach.

"Who did it?"

"Long ago," the General said.

"It doesn't matter now."

Ji-hwan put his mouth against the scar at the base of the General's spine and kissed it.

The General shuddered.

"You have a beautiful back," Ji-hwan said into his skin.

The General went rigid.

"Don't."

"Don't what?"

"Say things.

"I'm not used to it.

"I don't know where to put it."

Ji-hwan rested his forehead between the General's shoulder blades.
