Chapter 10: Hands Under the Table
I cooked that night, because the winter supplies were in.
There was a venison roast in the crate that Torben had probably meant as a bribe.
I put it in the oven with potatoes and onions.
I hit the damper with the heel of my hand, and it slid shut.
"She learns," Mikkel said from the table.
"I've been here five days."
"Six," Anders said, without looking up from the map he was marking.
We ate at the kitchen table in the lamplight, the three of us, with the wind off the bay shaking the windows.
Anders sat at the head of the table with his sleeves down.
Mikkel sat on my left.
I sat on his right, between them.
The food was good.
For a while nobody said anything except to pass the salt.
"Torben said something," I said at last.
"Torben says a lot of things," Mikkel said.
"He said you two smell like each other."
Mikkel put down his fork.
Anders did not look up.
"We've lived in one house for eight years," Mikkel said, lightly.
"We share a stove, a roof and a very small bathroom. What would you like us to smell like?"
"I don't know. Torben said it as if it meant something."
"It meant that Torben is a snake," Anders said.
"He wants the north post," Mikkel said. "He's wanted it since he was nineteen. He'd say anything to get us off it."
"He wants it more than he wants me?"
"Probably," Mikkel said. "You're only a girl. The post is a seat on the council."
I thought about it.
It made sense, and I let it go.
