Chapter 22: The Mating Bite

Anders's POV

We ran until the light went, the three of us, over the ridge and down the north slope in the snow.

When we came home, I carried her into the woodshed.

I had not planned the woodshed.

My body had.

It was the first place I had ever broken my word.

I wanted to break it here a second time, all the way, with nothing left to hide.

She was bare under my coat, with her hair loose and snow in it.

I set her down on her feet in the cedar chips and backed her against the woodpile.

"Here," I said.

"Here," she said, and laughed.

"I told you I was too big to take quickly," I said. "I told you to be sure with the door shut."

"I'm sure. The door's shut," she said.

"There isn't a door."

"Then you'll have to be quick," Linnea said, and pulled my head down.

I kissed her.

She tasted of snow and of the run, wild and clean.

I opened my mouth on hers and felt her wolf come up to meet mine.

It was the same pull I had felt at her door when she was twenty.

I had spent six years fighting it.

I did not fight it now.

Mikkel stood in the mouth of the shed with his shoulder on the post and his eyes bright.

He watched, and the whole of his attention was on me.

I felt him through the bond, a low fierce warmth in my belly.

"Go on, love," he said. "I'll wait my turn."

I lifted her.

I put my hands under her thighs and she wrapped her legs around my hips, and the logs shifted at her back.

I felt her heat against me, wet and open and waiting, and I groaned.

"Anders," she said, in my ear. "Now."

"Slowly."

"Not slowly."

I laughed against her throat.

I let the head of me find her.

Then I pushed into her in one long, steady stroke that did not stop until she had all of me.

She cried out.

She held on to my shoulders and arched, and her nails went into my back.

"There," she said. "That's what I wanted in the snow. That, Anders. All of it."
