Chapter 20: Chemo Chair

The infusion clinic had recliners the color of oatmeal and a television nobody could turn off.

Carlo drove me there in his own truck, because the Barsanti cars had been taken back by the Commission along with everything else with my father's name on it.

He parked, came around, and held my elbow all the way across the lot.

"I can walk," I said.

"I know you can walk."

"Then let go."

"No."

The nurse put a needle in the back of my hand and a bag of something clear on a pole.

Carlo pulled up a plastic chair.

It creaked under him.

"You don't have to stay," I said.

"The nurse said six hours."

"She said six hours for me."

"I heard her." He took out his phone, looked at it, and put it face down on his knee. "I cleared my week."

"You're the Don."

"I'm the heir pending confirmation. It's a lot of paperwork and four old men calling me twice a day." He shrugged. "They can wait."

I watched the drip.

It was strange to see my brother with nothing to do with his hands.

"Ciro came by the house this morning," Carlo said.

"I know. He's parking the car."

"He told me he's not going to Buffalo on Sunday."

I turned my head.

"He told the cousins he'll come when I can travel. If I can't, they can come here." Carlo's mouth did something dry. "He asked me if that was all right with the Commission."

"What did you say?"

"I said it's a free country. He said he's never been sure."
