Chapter 21: Taking the Job
Lucio got out of bed.
He didn't say anything.
He picked his trousers up off the floor and stepped into them in the dark.
Then he opened the top drawer of his dresser.
I heard the sound a pistol makes when it comes out from under folded shirts.
"Lucio."
"Go back to sleep, Rox."
"Put it down."
"He just paid to have me killed in my own father's house." He checked the clip by the light of the phone. "With you in the bed."
"He didn't pay yet."
"He will."
He sat on the edge of the dresser to put on his shoes.
The window was still open.
The fig tree whispered against the brick.
"This is how my grandfather did it," he said, very calm. "And his father. A car, a drive, a field in Johnston. In the morning the Hill knows and nobody says a word."
"And by Christmas half the capos are at war with the other half."
He stopped with one shoe on.
"Ugo's got men," I said. "He's got the linen trucks and the drivers and every cousin who thinks you went soft in the desert. You put him in a field, they'll say the Don killed his own uncle over a girl."
"Let them."
"They'll come for you, then. And then for Leni."
I got up and pulled on his white shirt from the floor.
It came to my knees.
I crossed the room and took the pistol out of his hand.
He let me.
It was heavier than I expected.
Everything on the Hill was heavier than it looked.
"He stood in that back room and let my mother tell eight men you used to stand outside my bedroom door," I said. "In front of the old Don's picture."
"I know."
