Chapter 10: Not One Client

Beatrice Prescott walked into Pike & Orrin on Thursday at ten in the morning, without an appointment.

I was in the glass conference room with both partners, going over a restaurant mock-up.

The receptionist knocked twice and opened the door.

"Mrs. Prescott is here," she said, in a small voice. "She said she would not wait."

Beatrice came in behind her in a camel coat, with a leather folder under one arm.

Both partners stood up.

One of them was a gray-haired man who had hired me, and the other was a brisk woman who had backed him.

"Mrs. Prescott," the man said. "Please. Sit."

"I'll stand," she said. "This won't take long."

She put the folder down on the table in front of me and opened it.

Inside was a single typed page and a pen.

"A statement," she said. "It says that Larkspur was founded with Prescott family capital, that you were an employee and not a founder, and that the circumstances of the last month were a private marital matter. You'll sign it and release it today."

I read the first line.

It also said I had been well compensated.

"I can't sign this," I said.

"You can. It costs you nothing."

"It isn't true."

"It is exactly as true as anyone will remember it," she said.

The partners exchanged a look.

"Mrs. Prescott," the woman said, "I don't think this is the place."

"You may think what you like. This man is causing my family public harm." She turned back to me. "Four million strangers are laughing at my daughter because of you."

"They're watching what her friends filmed," I said. "I didn't hold the camera."
