Chapter 14: First-Year Books
Adeline's POV
I went down to the archive room at six the next morning, because I wanted to prove my mother right.
I told myself that was the reason.
If the Prescotts had paid for Larkspur, I could stand up at the gala and say so without lying.
Then I would keep my chair, and Elias would only have been a man who worked very hard beside me.
The archive was a storeroom behind the loading dock, with a dripping pipe and forty gray boxes on metal shelves.
I found the one marked in my own handwriting.
Year One.
I carried it to the folding table under the one working bulb and cut the tape with my house key.
The first thing inside was the lease for the warehouse.
I read the signature page and saw my mother's name beneath the landlord's, in the box marked guarantor.
I smiled with relief.
"There," I said aloud.
I turned the page to see what she had put up, and the next page said the guarantee had been released in full after twelve months, with no payment made.
My smile stayed where it was, but it felt wrong on my face.
She had promised to cover the lease if we failed.
We never failed, so the promise never cost her a dollar.
I took out the bank statements and laid them across the table, month by month.
The company had opened its account in October, seven years ago.
