Seven Men Called Me Her Stand-In, So I Made Them Pay novel · Chapter 24 of 24
Chapter 24: The Porch Light
On Thursday morning Courtroom Four was full before the judge came in.
My mother sat in the front row in a borrowed wheelchair, with a cardigan over her shoulders.
The surgeon sat beside her, checking his watch.
Behind her sat five men in a row, in ties, and the pianist kept his hands folded in his lap.
The detective stood at the back by the door. He had shaved.
The young prosecutor in the navy suit rose at the other table.
"Your Honor, the state joins the motion," she said. "The original complaint was made in bad faith. The defendant was eighteen, and she was innocent."
"Nineteen," I said, before I could stop myself.
The judge glanced up from her papers.
"I'm sorry?"
"I was nineteen, Your Honor. I'd like that on the record."
"Then it will be on the record," said the judge, and wrote it down.
Anthony stood on my left with his hand a half inch from mine.
I did not take it yet.
The judge read for a long time. Then she took off her glasses.
"This court accepts the sworn statements of seven witnesses," she said. "It accepts an affidavit from an officer of this court who has paid a high price to give it."
She turned a page.
"It finds that the plea entered seven years ago was procured by a false accusation, and by a lawyer paid by the accuser."
She looked directly at me.
"Miss Lind. Please state your full name for the record."
My throat closed.
For seven years that name had been a thing I kept in a locked room.
"Tessa June Lind," I said.
It came out clear.
"The plea is vacated," said the judge. "The record of conviction is expunged. The court regrets the harm done in its name, and the time it took to learn of it."
