Chapter 5: The Homewrecker

Valerie Waldner sat down across from me at lunch with a tray and a smile.

The dining hall at Black Pine seats a hundred and twenty on long benches, and it was full.

It went quiet around us in widening rings.

Tobin, beside me, put his fork down.

"Morven," said Valerie. "Can we talk? Just us girls?"

"There are a hundred wolves here."

"Then they can hear that I mean it."

She folded her hands on the table, and her eyes were wet and bright.

"I've been so unfair to you," she said. "All these years. I never meant to hurt anyone. You know how Dane is, how he gets, he loses his head."

"He does."

"But I think this time we can fix it. For everyone. If you say yes to him at the Stone, none of it has to happen. The pack stays whole. Dane stays Dane."

"And you stay by the fire."

"I'd step aside," she said. "Truly. I'd leave."

"You said that the last four times."

Her smile held.

Across the hall, at the far end of the last bench, Duncan Strathclyde sat alone with a bowl of stew.

He wasn't looking at me.

He hadn't looked at me once since I sat down, and I could feel exactly where he was in the room.

I could still feel his thumb on my wrist.

I picked up my spoon and put it down again.

"Valerie, what did Dane tell you about the law?"

"That it's nonsense."

"He's right that it's inconvenient."

"Morven." Valerie leaned in, and her voice dropped to a whisper that carried to the next table. "If you don't say yes, he loses everything. He's the Alpha of this pack. It's all he has."

"He has you."

"Well, yes," she said. "But I'm not going to be Luna of nothing."
