Chapter 15: La Nursery

His sister came to the lake house at ten that night in a gray hoodie, with her hair in a wet knot.

The old man from the shed walked her to the porch with his flashlight.

She stood on the boards with both hands in her sleeves.

Renzo opened the door and neither of them spoke.

Then she said his name, and he pulled her in and held her hard with his chin on her head.

"You got tall," he said into her hair.

"I was twenty-three. I'm twenty-eight."

"You got tall anyway."

She laughed and it turned into a sob, and she wiped her face on his shirt.

When she let go, she looked at me.

She was a small, dark girl, with Adele's round cheeks and none of her calm.

"I put four laughing faces," she said. "Under Gianna's door line. I'm going to be sick about it for the rest of my life."

"Good," I said.

"Yes," she said. "That's fair."

Renzo made her tea, and she held the mug with both hands and did not drink it.

"Dario told me where you'd be," she said. "Not on purpose. I asked him four times and he looked at his shoes."

"Why did you come?"

She took her phone out of the hoodie and set it on the table, screen up.

"Mama made a second chat on Sunday night. I'm in it."

"Why would she add you?"

"I said at the table that I thought she'd gone too far, and she smiled at me." Her voice went thin. "Then she added me, so she could watch what I'd do."
