Chapter 9: The Hall

Renzo crossed the dining room and stopped behind my chair.

He did not touch the chair, or me.

He only stood there, and I felt the heat of him down my back.

"She's my wife," Dario said, and his voice cracked in the middle. "Papa, this is insane. She is my wife."

"Then be a husband," the old man said.

Dario looked at me, and for the first time all weekend he did not look charming.

He looked like a boy who had been caught.

"Casey, tell them. Tell them we can fix this."

I stood up.

The brooch pulled at my collar, so I unpinned it and laid it on the white cloth, beside the lamb.

"I'm filing for divorce," I said, in Italian, so that everyone heard. "On Monday. You can keep the house, and I'll keep my child."

Adele rose slowly out of her chair.

"You won't get far, cara," she said, very low, still smiling. "Not with what we have."

I did not ask what she had.

I picked up the iPad and walked out of the dining room with Renzo a step behind.

In the front hall I took my coat from the pile myself.

My hands had started to shake after all, and he saw it and said nothing.

We walked down the gravel to the truck in the dusk.

He opened my door and I got in, and he drove two miles in silence before he pulled onto a dark road shoulder and turned off the engine.

"Why did you agree?" I said. "At the table. He told you to stand there and you stood."

"He didn't tell me anything I wasn't going to do."

"You've known about Gianna for fourteen months."

"I wrote my father about her a year ago. Three letters." He stared at the windshield. "He never answered. Tonight I understood he'd read every one. He wanted to see what you'd do with it, and what Dario would."
