Chapter 8: The Silence

"You can't give her to anyone," Brigid said. "She isn't yours."

The senior Council member hammered the table until the hall quieted.

"The Old Writ is a matter for the full Council of nine," he said. "Three of us cannot take a silver wolf. We will convene in seven days and decide where she belongs."

"She belongs to herself," I said.

"Seven days," he said again, and he would not look at me.

I walked out.

I didn't wait for Ewan.

I heard the Strathmore wolves behind me, and Brigid's stick tapping on the stone, but I went straight through the crowd and out the side door into the cold alley behind the Moot Hall.

The wind slapped my face.

I leaned my forehead against the brick wall and tried to breathe.

My mother had offered me to the Council with a smile.

I heard the door open and shut.

"Thea."

"Go away."

"I'm not going to touch you," Ewan said. "I'm going to stand here. If you want me gone, say it twice."

I turned around.

He stood six feet away in the snow with his hands at his sides.

I wanted to hit him.

"You saw the knot glow," I said.

"Yes."

"You could have said it in the hall. Before she handed me the paper. You could have said, 'That girl is wearing a knot.'"

"I could have."

"Why didn't you?"

He took a breath.

"Because I didn't know who was holding the other end of it. If I had said it out loud in front of two hundred wolves, with three Council members in the front row, they would have had a silver wolf by dawn. You'd have been in a Council cell before you knew your own name."
