Chapter 18: The Gun
Lucio moved faster than I thought he could.
He vaulted the corner of the head table, caught me around the neck with his left arm, and jerked me back against his chest.
The muzzle of the pistol pressed hard against my temple.
Somebody screamed.
Chairs crashed over.
The band's drummer dove off the stage, and three hundred people dropped under the tables at once.
"Nobody move!" Lucio's voice cracked. "Nobody move or I'll kill her!"
His arm crushed my windpipe.
I could smell his cologne and the sour sweat under it.
I had worn that cologne on my pillow for eight months.
"Lucio," I rasped.
"Shut up."
"Lucio, it's over."
"I said shut up!"
Santino had his pistol out.
He stood twenty feet away with both hands steady and his eyes fixed on Lucio's face.
Lucio was holding me too close.
There was no line.
Around the room I saw hands going inside coats.
