Chapter 1: The Order He Cannot Give
Jamison waits for Passion outside the locked records room with her dismissal order, she forces him to admit he will not drive her out, and after he tears the order in half she leads him to the tracking truck and climbs inside, leaving him in the snow.
Jamison's thumb found the fold of the dismissal order before his eyes did.
It was still in his hand. Still creased from the courier's grip. Still signed.
The records hall was dark this early, the long window at the end of the corridor showing snow falling in slow, heavy curtains against the pre-dawn blue.
He remembered this morning.
He remembered the ink drying while he stood at the council table, remembered the exact weight of the pen, remembered signing his name like it cost him nothing.
Thirty years from now he would die alone in a bedroom that still smelled faintly of her soap.
And the daughter he had never met would stand at the back of the funeral, a stranger with his eyes.
He tore the order in half before the courier could take it.
The sound was loud in the empty hall. Then he tore it again, and again, until the pieces were too small to read.
'You're up early.'
Her voice came from the stairwell behind him.
Jamison turned.
Passion stood at the top of the steps, one hand on the rail, her dark coat already buttoned against the cold. Her hair was a crown of soft curls, dusted with snow at the edges. She had been outside.
She was always outside before dawn. He remembered that now. He had forgotten it the first time he lived this morning.
'You're standing outside a locked records room,' she said. 'That's either official business or a very strange place to wait for sunrise.'
Her eyes dropped to the torn paper in his hand.
Jamison watched her read the fragments. Watched her face go still.
He knew that stillness. He had seen it once before, all those years ago, when he had stood in the council chamber and told her she was no longer welcome in Greywarden Falls.
She had gone very quiet then too. Her eyes fixed on a point just past his shoulder.
'I came to find you,' he said.
'At the records room.'
'You come here before dawn. You check the tracking logs from the night patrols.'
Something flickered across her face. Surprise, quickly buried.
'You've been watching me.'
'I've been paying attention.'
Passion took a step closer. Then another. Her boots were silent on the stone floor.
'What's in your hand, Jamison?'
He opened his fingers. The torn pieces of the order scattered, drifted, settled on the floor between them like dead leaves.
'It was your dismissal,' he said. 'It doesn't exist anymore.'
She stopped walking.
'You came to drive me out again,' she said. Her voice was flat. Not a question.
'No.'
'That's what the order was for.'
'It was a mistake.'
'A mistake you signed.'
Jamison held her gaze. 'I'm not the man who signed it.'
The words felt thin in the cold air. He had rehearsed them for thirty years, and now they sounded like nothing.
Passion laughed. One short, dry sound.
'You're standing in the same body. Wearing the same suit. Holding the same pen, probably.' Her eyes went to the floor. 'But sure. You're a different man.'
'I want you to leave only if you choose it,' he said.
She went still again.
'What?'
'You heard me.'
'You want me to leave?'
'I want you to choose. Whatever you choose, I'll honor it.'
Passion stared at him. Her weight was on her back foot, he noticed. Ready to leave. It was how she always stood around him now.
'You don't get to do this,' she said quietly.
'Do what?'
'Show up before dawn with a torn-up order and act like you're giving me a choice. You made the choice all that time ago.'
She was close enough now that he could smell the snow in her hair. Pine and cold air and the faint, warm scent of her skin underneath.
His wolf stirred. It knew her. It had always known her.
'Then choose now,' he said. 'Stay or go. I'll sign either paper.'
'You don't have a pen.'
'I have the one I signed the order with.'
Passion looked at his hand. At the torn paper on the floor. At the window behind him where the snow kept falling.
'Why?' she asked.
It was the first real question she had asked him since he had driven her out. He could hear it in her voice, the crack under the ice.
'Because I remember everything,' he said. 'And I remember nothing about giving up.'
She flinched.
He had not meant it as a weapon. But it landed like one anyway.
'You don't get to say that to me,' she said. Her voice was low and shaking. 'You don't get to stand there with your torn paper and your second chances and act like you're the one who lost something.'
'I lost everything.'
The words came out before he could stop them.
Passion's eyes went wide. For a second, just a second, her guard dropped.
Then she laughed again. Harder this time. 'You're the Alpha. You have a pack. You have a council that worships you. You lost nothing.'
'I lost you.'
She went so still he thought she had stopped breathing.
'You never had me,' she said.
It was a lie. They both knew it. The bond hummed between them even now, four years of distance doing nothing to quiet it.
'Then let me earn you,' he said.
Passion shook her head. But she did not walk away.
'You want to prove something?' she asked.
'Yes.'
'Then follow me.'
She turned and walked toward the stairwell. Her boots were quiet on the stone. She did not look back.
Jamison followed.
The snow was deeper outside than it had looked from the window. It swallowed the sound of their footsteps as Passion led him across the pack compound, past the council chamber with its dark windows, past the empty training yard, toward the long low building where the tracking trucks were parked.
She stopped at the rear of the nearest truck and pulled open the door.
'You want to prove you've changed?' she said. 'Then you don't give orders. You don't decide. You follow.'
She climbed inside without looking back.
Jamison stood in the snow. The cold bit through his suit. His wolf pressed against his skin, wanting to shift, wanting to chase her, wanting to claim what it had always known belonged to it.
He held still.
From inside the truck, her voice came low and steady.
'If you are coming, get in.'
