Chapter 10: Caleb Counts

Caleb's POV

I watched Sabrina carry a tray across the café, and I hated every step she took.

She had a cup of tea for Elliott and a coffee for Asher, and she had remembered both orders without writing them down.

She set the tea in front of Elliott, and he said "Thank you" before she was finished putting it down.

She set the coffee in front of Asher and took his hand to check his bandage.

I had tried three times.

Once at the lab, once on the roof, once in the grove.

Each time Sabrina had looked up at me with a face like a lit window, and I'd asked her to bring me water.

Water.

I carry a thermometer now, God help me.

She laughed at something Elliott said, and the sound went through the whole café.
