Chapter 13: What He Did

"The rink's nearly empty," I told my mother. "Come down to the floor."

She followed me past the folding chairs and the last few families leaving the bout.

Toni stayed near the snack bar with Joel.

I carried two chairs onto the track and set them facing each other.

Catherine looked at them, then sat in one.

Her coat was wet at the collar from the rain outside.

"I came alone," she said.

"I saw."

"I asked the driver to leave after he dropped me off."

I took off my knee pads and placed them on the floor.

"You asked what Grayson did."

"Tell me."

I started with the birthday party.

I told her all of it, and I spared her nothing.

She didn't interrupt once.

Her hand stayed flat on her knee until I reached the end.

"The best man said there's a video," I said.

My mother pressed her palm over her mouth.

"You didn't tell me that."

"I found out on Monday. He refused to give it to me."

"Did you see it?"

"No."

"His friend refused to hand it over in front of his coworkers."

"You went to his office?"

"I went where he couldn't pretend I was a stranger calling him."

She looked at my scraped palms.

"I should have gone with you."

"You could have gone to the rink when Grayson named it a treatment center."
