Gideon landed in the clearing with a thump that shook the pine needles from the trees.
He was in his half form, black-winged and bare to the waist, with the moon behind him.
Chris was still lying against me in the moss.
The knot had loosened a minute earlier, and I was warm and boneless and wrapped in his arms.
"Go," Chris said into my hair.
"He's been walking up and down that tower since sundown."
"I don't need you to say it."
"I know you don't." His mouth quirked.
"I'm saying it anyway."
I stood up in my torn shirt.
Gideon held out his hand.
I took it.
"You lead tonight," I said.
"I know."
"Say it."
"I lead," said the dragon.
His eyes burned gold.
"And you let me."
He scooped me up against his chest, spread his wings, and jumped.
The ground fell away.
