She Fell for Her Stepbrother, Then Found Out She Was Pregnant novel · Chapter 14 of 24
Chapter 14: Photos
On Friday morning I took the stairs instead of the elevator, because the elevator smelled of someone's breakfast.
That was my whole reason.
I got as far as the third landing before I had to stop and lean my forehead on the cold concrete wall.
Mara had put crackers in my bag with a note that said eat these or I tell the building.
I was chewing the first one when I heard a shoe on the step below me.
"Lena. There you are."
Paul Whitaker came up the last flight, unhurried, with his jacket over his arm and his rimless glasses catching the light.
"I've been looking for you since eight," he said. "Do you have a minute?"
"I have a meeting."
"It's a short one."
He smiled his pleasant smile, the one that had asked after my mother at her funeral and meant it exactly as much as it means now.
I put the crackers in my pocket.
"Go ahead," I said.
He took out his phone, touched it twice, and turned the screen toward me.
It was a photograph taken at night through rain.
A wooden building at the end of a short dock, lit from inside.
A door standing open.
A man in the doorway with his back to the camera, and behind him a woman in a man's rain jacket, her hair wet, her face turned up to his.
The woman was me.
My knees went soft, and I put a hand on the railing.
"There are eleven more," Paul said gently. "The later ones are less flattering, I'm afraid. Your stepmother's flashlight shows up in two."
"You followed us."
"I didn't. I'm not that sort of man. I pay someone who is."
"To follow my family."
"To look after the company, Lena. I'd driven down for your father's signature on the Dayton lease, and I thought, why not make sure the weekend was quiet."
