Chapter 22: First Look

Lena's POV

I said no to the ring on Thursday and yes on Friday, and my mother would have approved of the order.

By Tuesday it was on my left hand, and my father could not stop looking at it.

He looked at it in the car.

He looked at it in the elevator of the medical building.

He looked at it in the waiting room.

He sat in a plastic chair between Diane and a woman in a pink maternity top.

"Richard," Diane said. "Stop staring at your daughter's finger."

"I'm checking the stone."

"It's the same stone you checked in the lobby."

"It might have changed."

The woman in the pink top hid a smile in her magazine.

Caleb stood beside my chair with his hand on the back of it.

He had been bouncing slightly on his heels for ten minutes.

"You're making me nervous," I said.

"I'm not nervous."

"You've read that poster about folic acid four times."

"It's very informative."

The nurse opened the inner door and called my name.

"Two guests only in the exam room," she said, with a look at the four of us. "Who's coming?"

"Him," I said, and pointed at Caleb.

My father's face fell.

"And me," I said, "obviously."

"Lena."

"Dad, there is a screen. You can see it from the door, if you stand very quietly and keep your reading glasses on."

"I'll stand like a statue."

"You've never stood like a statue in your life."

"I'll try."

The room was small and dim, with a bed, a machine and a poster of a cross-section I did not want to look at.

The sonographer was a calm woman in lavender scrubs who didn't tell us her name and didn't ask for ours.
