Chapter 16: One Founder, Again

I moved the Singapore announcement forward by two days.

It had been set for Wednesday, with a small room and a few trade reporters.

On Monday at nine, I stood at a podium in the Stamford atrium in front of eleven reporters and three cameras.

Daniel stood at the side wall with a folder.

"Pathlight has signed the largest agreement in its history," I said. "A grocery network across Southeast Asia, funded in full."

A reporter near the front raised her pen.

"Ms. Hartnell, Brodie Kittredge says he is a cofounder and you erased him. Is that true?"

"Pathlight has one founder," I said.

I nodded to Daniel, and he handed a page to the reporter.

"That's our certificate of incorporation. Dayton, Ohio, eleven years ago. My name is on it, and nobody else's."

"He says he built the Asian partnership."

"Mr. Kittredge has never been to Singapore. He took a honeymoon in Bali with a layover."

The room laughed, and I let it.

"He was hired four years ago as VP of Partnerships, and I signed his offer letter. I ended that job three weeks ago."

The reporter was looking at her phone.

"Ms. Hartnell, I've just received a statement from the chairman's office in Singapore."

"Please read it."

She cleared her throat.

"'The chairman has met one founder in this matter. Her name is Susannah Hartnell. Any letter claiming otherwise was not sent by us and was not requested by us.'"

Nobody in the atrium made a sound.

Then someone at the back began to clap.
