Chapter 17: Wiped
Mitchell's POV
My brother put his arm around Valerie's shoulders in my own doorway, and I watched her let him.
She smiled at the senator.
She even leaned her head toward Bennett, a little.
Only I knew how hard she was pressing her nails into her own palm behind his back.
"Mitch builds these himself," Bennett said. "He never lets anyone see. Show the senator the hull."
"It's not finished," I said.
"All the more reason."
The senator walked down the steps to the boat bay and put his hand on a rib.
"Is this white oak?" he asked.
"Steam-bent, over a cedar keel."
"My father built skiffs. He'd have stood here all day."
He was an easy man to like, and I didn't want to.
Behind him the security man had come up the steps with his jacket over his arm, nodding at nobody.
"Restroom?" he asked.
"Down the hall," Valerie said. "Second door."
He went down the hall, and I heard the door shut.
I didn't think anything of it.
Bennett steered me out onto the dock with a hand between my shoulder blades, and the senator followed with Valerie a step behind.
The bay was flat and bright.
"Look at this," Bennett said to the senator. "My brother, the hermit. Four years in a shed, and now he's coming home."
"Am I?"
"Mom's papers are on the kitchen table. Your seat on the board, Dad's shares, the lot." He squeezed my neck. "The senator's very pleased. We'll put your name back in the benefit program."
