Chapter 8: The Moon Hall

The pack had started gathering in the moon hall before dawn.

They came every year to hang cedar on the rafters, and to watch the bonding of the Alpha's heir.

By the time Bram and I got there, with the elders behind us, there were two hundred people inside.

Linnet stood on the dais in front of the great stone bowl.

She had found something white to wear.

It was a bridal veil from the ceremony chest, pinned to her wet hair, and she had the whole hall's attention.

"There he is," she said.

Everyone turned.

Bram stopped in the doorway.

"Linnet, get down from there."

"I will not." She spread her arms. "Everyone, listen. Bram is my mate."

A murmur ran through the hall.

I could feel it on my skin.

"He opened a bond to me when I was sixteen, and it has never closed," Linnet said. Her voice rang. "I called for him a hundred times. Every time, he came. He sat with me on his porch. Ask him if it's a lie."

Heads turned back to Bram.

He didn't answer at once.

I understood why.

He had sat on that porch, and she was using it.

"She's not wrong that I came," he said. "I came because the healer asked me to be kind."

"Kind," Linnet said, and laughed. "He calls it kindness. Today he'll mark that woman, and every mind in this valley will know he threw me aside."
