Chapter 6: The Back Room

Dominic stepped in front of me before Silvio finished the sentence.

He did it slowly, and he did it so I could not see around him.

"Not now, Silvio," he said.

"Of course." Silvio's voice stayed mild. "I only came to meet the young lady. Mr. Regan speaks so well of her."

My skin went cold.

"You know Ethan?" I asked, past Dominic's arm.

"Everyone at the tables knows Ethan," Silvio said. He smiled at me kindly. "A lovely boy. He always pays in the end."

"Silvio."

"Boss." He bowed his head. "The ledgers will keep."

He set the leather folder on a chair and went out, and he left the door open behind him.

Dominic shut it and turned the lock again.

"What did he mean, pays in the end?"

"I'll find out."

"You said that already."

"And I'll say it again until it's done." He picked up my coat and held it open. "Tonight I'm taking you somewhere. After that, I'll have answers."

I put my arms in the sleeves. My hands were not quite steady.

"Where?"

"Somewhere with no one in it but us," he said. "You look like you need it."

The club had no sign on its door.

It sat in a basement under one of his restaurants.

Dominic walked me through a kitchen, down a corridor and into a small room at the end.

It had dark walls and a wide leather bench.

On one wall hung a rack of things I looked at once and then looked away from.

My face burned.

"You can look," Dominic said.

I looked.

Paddles, cuffs, a long soft strip of black cloth. A single coiled rope.

"I don't know what any of that does."

"I'll tell you what each one does before it touches you. You say no to any of it, it goes back on the wall." He took off his jacket. "That's your first rule. I'm keeping it."
