Chapter 13: Thirty Out of Thirty

The hearing was in a paneled courtroom on Washington Street, in front of a judge with reading glasses on a chain.

I walked in on my cane, with Hannah on my left and the lawyer on my right.

Lyle sat across the aisle in a navy suit and gave me a small, sorry smile.

Celia sat behind him in the first row, in her charcoal coat, with both hands folded on her cane.

Lyle's attorney called the neurologist first.

He was a silver-haired man with a calm voice, and he told the court that I had a traumatic brain injury, that I was taking high-dose opioids, and that I could not be trusted with a fifty-one percent vote.

"Doctor," the judge said. "When did you examine the respondent?"

"I reviewed his records."

"That isn't what I asked."

"I haven't examined him in person, Your Honor. The records were sufficient."

"Who gave you the records?"

The neurologist looked at Lyle's attorney, then at the first row.

"A member of the family."

The judge wrote something down, slowly, and did not look up.

"Call your next witness."

"The petitioner calls Dr. Hannah Brooks."

I turned my head.

Hannah stood, and her face told me nothing.

The attorney had meant to use her.

She took the oath and sat with her back straight.

"Dr. Brooks, you are the respondent's surgeon?"

"I am."

"You prescribed him opioids at discharge."

"I wrote a three-day script for tramadol, the lowest dose I use. He told me he wouldn't fill it, and he didn't. The pharmacy record is Exhibit D. He has taken acetaminophen since his fourth day."
