Chapter 24: Her Own Name

On the morning of my wedding, my mother fastened a bracelet around my wrist.

It was the small hospital band from the day I was born, the plastic gone yellow and soft, the ink faded but still readable.

Baby Girl Rochefort.

"I kept it for eighteen years," Margaux said. "I thought I would never see you wear it."

"Maman, it's too small."

"I had it widened. A jeweler put gold around it." She turned my wrist in her hands, and her eyes filled. "Look at the inside."

I turned it over.

Along the gold, someone had engraved the name in a thin, careful script:

Élise Rochefort.

"The name was only ever missing from the record," my mother said. "Never from us."

The home had not closed.

The Rochefort family foundation had bought it in January.

The oldest child there, a solemn boy of nine, had been given the job of carrying the rings on a cushion.

He had not stopped checking them since breakfast.

Henri walked me up the aisle.

He had not wanted to speak, and he did not, until we reached the arch of white roses at the end of the lawn.
