Chapter 20: The Board
The board of Beck Pictures met on the thirty-third floor at nine sharp.
Twelve leather chairs surrounded a table built for a king.
Harlan Beck sat at the head of it in a navy suit, with his signet ring on the wood and a cup of black coffee going cold.
He had asked for a vote.
He had not asked for me.
I walked in at five past, with Penelope on my left and my chief of staff on my right.
Beck's smile slid halfway off.
"This is a closed meeting," he said.
"This is my company," I said.
"Not for another fifteen minutes it isn't."
He turned to the twelve faces around the table.
"Gentlemen, ladies. You've all seen the warrant. The man who forced me to sign over my studio at knifepoint is the man who forged a London shell and laundered money through it. I'm asking you to void the sale and remove him."
"At knifepoint?" Penelope said.
Beck's eyes flicked to her.
"I know you," he said slowly. "You're the girl who brought my coffee."
"For eighteen months."
"You said your name was Penny."
"It is. Ambrose is the rest."
A chair creaked.
Beck's face went white.
"Sit down," he said.
"I'd rather stand."
She put the folder on the table, and my chief of staff laid a second one on top.
"Item one," Penelope said. "Dozens of pages of Wesley's signature, practiced by Sonia Rhodes over a year, and the sample page your driver delivered to her house."
"You can't prove that."
"Item two. A wire schedule for the London account, in your handwriting. I've seen your handwriting on four hundred memos."
"Anyone can copy a hand."
"Item three. The routing number that funded the shell is from Ambrose Pictures, closed four years ago by my father. You used our dead account because you thought no one would look at it."
"I never touched your family."
"You wrote a line on the back," she said. "If Thornton walks, the Ambroses fall with him."
