Chapter 8: The Ambrose Girl
She had picked a diner in Queens, the kind with a bell on the door and one waitress.
I came alone, as asked, and left my phone in the car.
A woman sat in the last booth with her hands around a cup.
Auburn hair tied back, a plain dark coat, gray eyes that were already on me when the bell rang.
She stood up.
"Mr. Thornton."
"Miss Ambrose."
"Penelope is fine."
"You said you could prove who froze my accounts."
"I know."
I sat down across from her.
She did not sit right away.
She looked down at the table, and her eyes were wet.
"I don't actually know who froze your accounts," she said. "I wrote that so you'd come."
I frowned.
"You lied to get me here."
"It was the only message you would have opened." She sat. "I sent forty-one others in four years, and every one went unanswered."
I did not argue.
It was true, and she had earned a straight face.
"Can I ask you something?" she said. "Why did you pay my father's debts?"
"I didn't."
"My father owed three banks eleven million dollars after you took our distribution deals. A month later, every one of those loans was marked paid. He thought it was a clerical error. It took us a year to find your name on the transfers."
I looked at the table.
"I needed your studio out of my way," I said. "Your father losing the company was the deal. Your whole family losing their home wasn't."
"Is that all it was?"
"That's all."
"It stayed with me anyway," she said.
