Chapter 19: Ask Me Anything

Danielle's POV

I wrote rule one in a lawyer's office, the week a former employee sued me over a breakup.

I had never been tempted by it once.

Now I stood in Nathan Ames's office with my back to a closed door, and I could not remember what the rule was for.

"Say something," I said.

"The rule is yours," he said. "I'll follow it if you tell me to."

His voice was rough. His bandaged hand was flat on the desk beside him.

I crossed the last of the carpet.

"Then I'm telling you something else," I said.

I kissed him.

He went still for the length of one breath, and then his good hand came up and slid into my hair and he kissed me back.

It was not careful.

He kissed me hard, with his mouth open under mine and his hand holding the back of my head.

I walked him backward until his hips hit the desk.

A pen rolled off and hit the floor.

Neither of us looked.

His hand moved from my hair to my jaw, then down my neck, and he stopped at the collar of my dress. I felt his thumb shake against my collarbone.

"Tell me to stop," he said against my mouth.

"No."

I got my hands under his jacket and pulled his shirt out of his waistband.

His skin was hot against my palms, and he made a low sound I would hear for a week.

Against my hip I felt exactly how much he wanted this.

I told myself it was adrenaline, and the stress of the morning, and a body doing what bodies do.

Then he said my name, just once.

I stopped.
