Chapter 11: Why I Asked My Mother
"Quiet about what?" my mother said again.
Veronica swung her arm out and pointed across the table.
"That he's been sleeping with his ER chief for three years," she said. "Ask her why she stood up on Monday. Ask what they were doing in the scrub room yesterday with his hand on her."
Morven did not flinch.
She sat with her back straight and her face flat, and I felt her go stiff beside me.
"Is that what you've got?" my mother said.
"It's the truth."
"It's a guess, and a poor one. My son has been in your house for nine years and in this building for ten. If he were the kind of man you describe, you would have found something better to say."
"Mrs. Hallett..."
"Ms. Fitzwilliam. Your badge. Your keys."
My mother lifted two fingers, and two men from the back wall stepped forward.
Veronica looked at me one last time.
Then she unclipped her badge from her lapel and tossed it on the oak, and it skidded to a stop in front of the portrait's frame.
She walked out through the double doors without looking at anyone.
The whole board exhaled.
Morven stood up.
She walked out the other door before I could say a word.
I caught her in the corridor by the elevators.
"Morven, wait."
"I'm on shift in ten minutes."
"She's lying."
"I know she's lying." Morven turned around. Her jaw was tight. "That's not what I'm angry about."
"Then what?"
"Six years," she said. "You asked your mother to give her this job."
I had known it would come out.
I had not known it would come out like this.
