Chapter 14: Discharge Day

Mrs. Frawley went home at noon in a wheelchair, with a pillow held against her chest.

She had been awake for two days, and she had asked for her knitted hat before she asked for water.

Dale pushed the chair.

Cody walked three steps behind them, because his father had not told him he could walk beside.

Morven and I took the elevator down with them.

I carried a bag of discharge papers and two pill organizers, and Morven carried the cat toy Mrs. Frawley had made her promise to take home.

"She'll be out in the lobby," I said quietly to Dale.

"I know."

"You don't have to walk through it. There's a side door."

"I walked in through the front," Dale said. "I'll walk out the front."

The elevator opened.

The lobby was full of people who had nowhere to be.

Veronica stood by the bronze plaque in a cream coat, with her hair freshly done.

A woman with a microphone stood at her elbow, and a man with a camera stood behind the woman.

"There he is," Veronica said, and her voice carried across the marble. "There's the man I'm divorcing."

Heads turned.

The camera swung toward me.

"I want the public to know what happened here," she said, to the woman with the microphone. "My husband has been carrying on with a subordinate for three years. When I found out, he had me removed from the job I gave my life to."
