Chapter 24: Eastbrook

The board met on Monday in the ninth-floor room with the oak table and the old man's portrait.

This time I sat at the head of it.

My mother had pulled out the chair herself, and then she had gone to sit by the window with her gloves in her lap.

"Move to order," she said from there. "I'm retired. I'm not allowed to talk."

"You're talking," said one of the board members.

"I'm commenting."

The whole board laughed, and I felt the chair take my weight.

It was an old leather chair, and it creaked.

Morven sat at my right in her cleanest scrubs, with the garnet on her hand and her braid over her shoulder.

She had been named interim chief of medicine at eight that morning, and she had told me she would sooner be hit by a bus.

I opened the first folder.

"Item one," I said. "The director's office."

A pause went around the table.

It was the corner office on the fourth floor, with the glass wall and the view of the lake.

Veronica had spent six years in it, and its door still had her name in brass.

"I propose," I said, "that it not have a director."

"The hospital needs a director," said the lawyer.

"It has one. She works on the first floor, in the emergency department, in scrubs." I nodded at Morven. "She has agreed to run the hospital from the floor, and to fire me if I forget."
